Томас Лоуренс самый сильный портретист Англии конца 18 начала 19 веков. Этот уникальный художниик не получивший систематического, фундаментального художественного образования, сумел, тем не менее, во многом самостоятельно, и очень быстро добиться потрясающего, блестящего совершенства в графическом, и живописном портретном искусстве. Художник, чье творчество олицетворяет настоящий праздник живописи, к сожалению известен в основном лишь гурманам старинного парадно – камерного портрета. Так сложилось, что, живший с ним в одну эпоху более слабый и менее внятный, и выразительный портретист Гойя известен гораздо больше Лоуренса. Но если кто – либо хочет по настоящему поучиться мастерству классической портретной живописи, то ему следует учиться у подлинных корифеев Веласкеса, Рембрандта, Ван Дейка, Рубенса, Ларжильера, ну и конечно же у блестящего Лоуренса.
